Health/Wellness Fair – March 22, 2014

The Chattanooga Scenic City Sickle Cell is conducting trait testing at the Health/Wellness Fair on March 22, 2014. The testing is open to individuals who reside in Chattanooga and the surrounding Hamilton County area who were born before 1992. Sickle cell is an inherited condition that is the most common and serious disease among African Americans. The disease has been described in individuals from several different ethnic backgrounds such as Hispanic, Latino Americans- particularly those of Caribbean, Central American, and South
American ancestry.

The sickle cell trait is considered a generally benign condition. Individuals who inherit one sickle cell gene and one normal gene will have what is known as the sickle cell trait. People with the sickle cell trait generally do not experience symptoms of the sickle cell disease. Usually, resulting in the trait being passed to the carrier’s offspring because they were unaware of their sickle cell trait status.

Approximately 1 in 12 African Americans carries the sickle trait. However, millions of people are not cognizant of their trait status. It is important to know a person’s trait status so that the risks are known before having children that could potentially have the sickle cell disease.

A simple blood test drawn from the finger can help determine if an individual carries the sickle cell trait or other unusual hemoglobin.
